Restoran Jamal Mohamed

It was a rainy Saturday morning, and while others is still hiding below their comfy blanket, I on the other hand woke up around 8AM, getting myself prepared for a food-venturous day. Went to Taman Mayang Jaya to pick my friend (Sky Ngo) up and off we dash to Restoran Jamal Mohamed at Kelana Jaya

Restoran Jamal Mohamed
24, Jalan SS5A/9
Kelana Jaya

Initially I thought this is just another mamak restaurant but serves better quality food, and to my surprise I was totally wrong. If I were to interpret it on my own word, this would then be the halal version of hawker store.

As seen from the photo, the restaurant is made up from different stall with each selling different cuisine whether it is a Malay cuisine, Chinese food, or Indian food, they are all available here. There is quite a fair amount of stall serving almost 50 (if not more than) of dishes.

One of the famous dish here have to be the Nasi Lemak Kukus Kangkung where usually by lunch hour, it would be sold out. That explain why we (the Selangorlicious foodie) are willing to crawl out from bed this early to try the dish out.

Queue soon started to pile up and just before I finish snapping photos of the surrounding and trust me, each of these in the queue order more than one, and some even prepare to take home too. That really got me curious and wanted to try it dearly on why people would go crazy for it.

So one of the foodie, I think it was Senri and Cian from the same table ordered Nasi Lemak Kukus Kangkung with Sotong. So we all dig in and tried the all time famous dish as claimed by many and I have to say, tastiness is a very subjective manner. It may be good to many but not to my liking. I shall give you my honest opinion on the few dishes we tried from the same stall. There was also another foodie, Thomas, Cindy, and I ordered the Nasi Lemak Kukus Kangkung with Fried Chicken. The base is the same, only the add on that differ. Let's begin with the nasi lemak (coconut rice), I find it lacking of coconut cream fragrant and if I'm allow to compare to other nasi lemak within Klang Valley, I would say Nasi Lemak Bumbung serves by far one of the best (and dirtiest) nasi lemak whereby even without gravy it bring out the aromatic fragrant. Likewise the nasi lemak here comes with standard condiment like peanut, boiled egg, chunk cucumber, anchovies, and sambal (spicy gravy) and what's additional here compare to other is the Kangkung.

The add-on sotong we had was good but not to the extend of great, that's according to my opinion, maybe because I have had something better. The sotong was timely cooked where it is not too "rubberish" and is spicy inside out. The fried chicken on the other hand is flavourful and spicy on the outside, but is rather dry on the inside. Overall, the Nasi Lemak Kukus Kangkung is OK but failed to deliver WOW factor to me.

Next up is the mysterious Dried Wanton Noodle where it was there sitting on our table when we return from ordering our food. The Wanton Noodle is serves with roasted chicken instead of wanton. The chicken was tender and moist and there's also a fair chunk of bone in it, it would be better if they serves shredded chicken for easy consumption.

The noodle has a smooth and fine texture which is not too soggy. The dark gravy is just OK and doesn't bring out the strong flavour in the dish. Portion wise it is average and good for an adult as breakfast.

Moving on is the Fried Kuey Teow where we ordered both spicy and non-spicy to try on the different. This is probably one of the smallest portion Fried Kuey Teow I've ever seen. It does look pretty standard like elsewhere with average amount of lala and prawn in it. The kuey teow has soft and smooth texture, and it is not too oily, judging from the fact that usually Fried Kuey Teow is much more oily than this.

Whether it is spicy or non-spicy, the taste wise is rather blunt. It is very lightly flavoured and there's much more better version of this out there. The seafood used however, is pretty fresh and I can still taste the sweetness in it.

I usually have noodle with gravy at night, but today we decided to order on Cantonese Noodle and share among everyone on the same table. There is a few option to choose from whether you would want fried meehon, kuey teow, or mixed of both. The choice of noodle is then topped with thick and sticky gravy that is cooked with prawn, cabbage, green vegetable, chicken, and egg.

What amaze me is that it is surprisingly good. The gravy is rich in flavour and there is a generous portion of ingredient in it. The gravy wasn't over dry or did it have any burnt taste in it.

The Curry Noodle here is not bad too where it is rich and flavourful without being overly spicy. I could even taste the presence of santan and the curry is just spoonful satisfaction sip after sip. There's also lala and fried tofu in it to spice up the flavour and taste.

Selangorlicious treated us like their children and ordered the Tauhu Bakar for each table despite feeling quite full at that point of time, but hey we foodie never say no to food, don't we?

The pan grilled toufu is serves crispy with sweet sauce filling the inner part of it and is mixed with slices of cucumber and some crunched peanut. Each bite is crunch fulfilling and the sauce isn't overly sweet in my opinion. Definitely a must for those who don't mind the sinful bite :D

How can it call it an end without actually having and tasting Malaysia all time favourite food, the roti series. We had Roti Bom, Roti Planta, Roti Telur, Roti Telur Bawang, and we also ordered Murtabak daging.

The roti series is quite good and not too flourish. It has the just nice thickness and it is crunchy on the outside and soft and warm in the inside. The only one that is kinda oily is obviously the Roti Bom, and Roti Planta where obviously it uses planta as the key ingredient. There is also a very generous chunk chopped onion that bring out the sweetness to the roti.

The Murtabak Daging is stuffed with minced beef (or other choice would be chicken) and chopped onion into roti like skin and is pan grilled until golden brown. The filling were good and tasty and every bite is packed with meat of satisfaction.

There were still stall that I didn't have the chance to try on, but they do look promising. Perhaps that's a plan for second visit. For years I've lived in SS23, somewhere really nearby Restaurant Jamal Mohamed, I have never heard of such restaurant, at least not until Selangorlicious introduce it.

Before we head home, here'a a group photo from all the foodie and the team from Selangorlicious.
